New Human Pathophysiology and Translational Medicine (HPTM) Graduate Program Vaccinology Track Launched
The UTMB Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences has recently approved the Vaccinology Track for current and prospective PhD students in the HPTM graduate program (https://its.utmb.edu/learning/degrees-certificates/hptm/human-pathophysiology-and-translational-medicine-phd) plus graduate students in other graduate programs who have passed their qualifying exam. The track is a collaboration between the HPTM Graduate Program and the Sealy Institute for Vaccine Sciences (www.utmb.edu/sivs). The Track is available to current students now and is designed for students who want to become experts in the translational pathway for new vaccine research and development, and deployment. It aims to train the next generation of vaccinologists in the science of vaccinology and enable students to realize the full breadth of opportunities in the vaccinology field and job market beyond basic bench science research, including positions within non-government organizations, government entities, and the pharmaceutical industry. The vaccine development pipeline is, by nature, translational, interprofessional, and multidisciplinary; therefore, competencies in team science and team leadership must be an integral part of the curriculum. The HPTM program is dedicated to developing these competencies in our students.
The Director of the Vaccinology Track is Gregg Milligan, PhD with Alan Barrett, PhD, David Beasley, PhD, Dennis Bente, DVM, PhD, and Richard Rupp, MD as Associate Directors.
A brief description of this track is available at: https://its.utmb.edu/learning/degrees-certificates/vaccinology-track/about-the-vaccinology-track.
There is also a webpage for graduate students to sign up for the Vaccinology Track.
We have recently advertised for the first intake to the Vaccinology Track and seven graduate students have enrolled in the Track. Three are in the HPTM Graduate Program, and two each are in the Experimental Pathology and Microbiology & Immunology Graduate Programs.
