GSBS Research Expo 2024

The second annual GSBS Research Expo will be held on Friday, September 20, 2024, from 9:30-2pm on campus in the Health Education Center. The expo provides an opportunity for GSBS predocs, postdocs, and medical students participating in GSBS training programs to present their research, network with faculty and trainees from across the UTMB campus, attend the keynote talk by GSBS alum Dr. Bettina Mittendorfer, and gain information about available trainee resources. Incoming students are encouraged to attend meet their GSBS peers and learn more about research on campus.

  • Poster Registration Deadline: September 8th (extended from September 1st)
  • All Other Attendees RSVP Deadline: September 13th

Poster Submission Instructions

All GSBS students, postdocs, and medical students working in GSBS labs are invited to present a poster. Please click the following Registration Link to register your poster.

Trainees preparing a poster are encouraged to use the new UTMB templates (including ones with the GSBS logo) available through BioRender.  To view these templates, sign in to BioRender here and click “Posters” (under "BioRender Templates" tab). Use of BioRender is FREE to anyone on the UTMB campus!  Simply log in using your UTMB credentials and you will have access to this amazing software that allows you to create beautiful posters, figures, and more!

Talk Title: "Some Words of Wisdom from a Senior Associate Dean of Research and New Insights into the Relationship between Diet and Atherosclerosis"

Dr. Bettina Mittendorfer is the NextGen Precision Health Endowed Professor of Medicine and Nutrition & Exercise Physiology and Senior Associate Dean for Research at the School of Medicine at the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO. In addition, Dr. Mittendorfer is the director of the NextGen Clinical and Translational Science Unit, which provides personnel and infrastructure support for sophisticated inpatient and outpatient clinical trials, and the inaugural director of the Metabolic Kinetics Core at the University of Missouri. Before moving to the University of Missouri in Aug 2023, Dr. Mittendorfer has worked a Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO for 24 years, where she last was a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Geriatrics and Nutritional Science, the director of the Longevity Research Program, which is supported by the Longer Life Foundation, the director of the NIH-funded Clinical and Translational Research Unit, and the Associate Director of the NIH-funded Washington University Nutrition and Obesity Research Center (NORC). Dr. Mittendorfer’s research focuses on the metabolic and physical function abnormalities associated with obesity and aging and putative therapeutic approaches. She has published over 170 peer-reviewed original research papers, perspectives, and scientific reviews. She serves as Associate Editor for the journals Obesity and J Physiol, and as Associate Editor for Physiological Reviews.
