General Scholarship Awards

  1. Arthur V. Simmang Academic Scholarships–This scholarship is awarded to students with excellent academic achievement and demonstrated financial need who are enrolled in a degree-seeking GSBS program. This award is $5000.
  2. Zelda Zinn Casper Scholarship–A full stipend plus a travel award is available to an outstanding student showing superior accomplishments and promise for achieving excellent dissertation research. The student must be a U.S. citizen, 2nd or 3rd year student and may receive this scholarship only once. The award is $27,000 (full stipend) plus a $1000 travel award.
  3. James E. Beall II Memorial Scholarship–This scholarship is available for a student who is enrolled as a regular, full-time doctoral degree-seeking student and is based on academic qualifications including GRE scores, TOEFL scores (where required), grade point average, advanced degrees, research experience, and motivation and dedication to a career in biomedical research. The award is $1000.
  4. Kay and Cary W. Cooper, Ph.D. Scholarship–This scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student and citizen of UTMB and is open to all students enrolled in the GSBS. This award is $1000.
  5. Curtis W. Lambert Scholarship–This scholarship recognizes a regularly enrolled graduate student (2nd year or higher) who has succeeded academically (overall GPA of at least 3.0) and who demonstrates financial need. The award is $1000.
  6. GSBS Associates Scholarships–These scholarships recruit outstanding Ph.D. candidates to UTMB or recognize students of exceptional merit early in their career (usually 1st or 2nd year). Two awards of $1000 each are given.
  7. Edith and Robert Zinn Presidential Scholarship–This award is given to a student enrolled in the GSBS who demonstrates the highest standing in all aspects of graduate education, academics, research and citizenship. This award is $2000.
  8. Dennis Bowman Memorial Scholarship–This award, open to all students enrolled in the GSBS, is awarded to an outstanding student and citizen of UTMB. This award is $1000.
  9. Betty Williams, Ph.D. Tuition Scholarship–This scholarship recognizes an outstanding bench scientist, with special consideration for disadvantaged students. The award is $1000.
  10. Robert Bennett Tuition Scholarship–This scholarship recognizes an outstanding student enrolled in the GSBS. The award is $1000.
  11. Bohdan Nechay Tuition Scholarship–This scholarship recognizes an outstanding student enrolled in the GSBS. The award is $1,000.
  12. Stephen C. Silverthorne Memorial Scholarship–This award is presented to a student on the basis of perseverance and excellence in any field of research. The award is a plaque and check for $500.
  13. Ann and John Hamilton Endowed Scholarship–This award recognizes demonstrated academic excellence. This award is $1000.
  14. University Federal Credit Union Scholarship–This scholarship, sponsored by the UFCU, honors excellence in academics and citizenship for outstanding students in the GSBS. The award is $1000.
  15. UTMB Retirees Scholarship Award–This award recognizes an outstanding graduate student. This award is $1,000.
  16. Leroy Olson, Ph.D. Endowed Scholarship–This scholarship is presented to a student based on merit and high academic standards. This award is $1,000.
  17. David and Janet Niesel Scholarship–This award is open to all students enrolled in the GSBS, and rewards an outstanding student and citizen of UTMB. This award is $1000.
  18. The Ralph and Mary John Spence Centennial Scholarship–This award was established in 1991 to provide an annual award to an outstanding student from one of the four UTMB schools. The recipient should meet the following criteria: be a student in good standing, demostrate superior academic performance, exhibit high personal and professional ethics, values and standards, and demonstrate financial need. This award is $1400.
  19. Ann Anderson Scholarship–This scholarship was established in recognition and appreciation of the years of dedicated service by Ms. Anderson to the GSBS and to UTMB. This scholarship is to be used to support students who are in good standing and enrolled in any program in the GSBS. The award check is $500.

Travel Awards

  1. Margaret Saunders Travel Award–This award is to supplement Ph.D. candidate’s travel to present their work at national or international meetings. One award of $1000 is available.
  2. GSBS Associates Christina Fleischmann Travel Awards–These awards are to supplement a Ph.D. candidate’s travel to present their work at national and international meetings. Two awards of $500 are available.
