HOW TO GET A CREDIT CARD AS A MEMBER OF OPS

 Members of the Organization of Postdoctoral Scientists are eligible for a credit card through special arrangements with the University Federal Credit Union.

 This program is designed primarily to help foreign postdocs begin to establish a credit history, essential for purchasing a car and many other items in the U.S.  American citizens that meet the requirements are also eligible.

 Requirements:

1.  membership in UFCU ($1.00 membership fee + $5.00 savings account balance).

2.  proof of employment with UTMB

3.  no existing bad credit

4.  Social Security number.

 The credit card is a VISA with a $500 credit limit.

Public Policy Opportunities for Scientists & Medical Professionals

  • Are you interested in applying your scientific and medical expertise to government decision-making in Washington, DC?
  • Would you like to work for a year in Congress or in one of a dozen federal agencies, learning how science policy is formed?

Science and technology policy fellowships provide opportunities for postdoctoral to mid-career scientists and medical professionals to participate in the federal decision-making process of Washington, DC, while learning how government works. These programs, sponsored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, allow qualified individuals to work on domestic or international science policy issues through one-year assignments in the Congress or participating federal agencies.

A sampling of issues that Fellows might address includes:

  • Issues related to food safety and human health
  • Bioterrorism
  • Genetics discrimination / gene therapy
  • International cooperation in science
  • Funding for basic research

Qualifications: Applicants must have an M.D., D.V.M., Ph.D. or an equivalent doctoral-level degree in any physical, biological or social science, any field of engineering or any relevant interdisciplinary field. Individuals with a master's degree in engineering and three years of post-degree professional experience also may apply. U.S. citizenship is required. Federal employees are not eligible.
