Mentoring Program for Female Postdocs

The Women's Faculty Caucus is reviving a mentoring program for female postdocs.
Dr. Cheryl Watson of BMB is coordinating this program which will match interested postdocs with female faculty mentors from outside the postdoc's department but with similar areas of scientific interest, if possible. The program is extremely flexible and based on the needs of the postdoc.

National Academies Program

The National Research Council announces the 2002 Postdoctoral and Senior Research Associateship Programs to be conducted on behalf of over 120 research laboratories throughout the United States representing nearly all U.S. government agencies with research facilities.

The programs provide opportunities for Ph.D., Sc.D. or M.D. scientists and engineers of unusual promise and ability to perform research on problems largely of their own choosing, yet compatible with the research interests of the sponsoring laboratory.

Approximately 300 full-time Associateships will be awarded on a competitive basis in 2002. Most laboratories are open to both U.S. citizens and foreign nationals. Postdoctoral awards are made for 1 or 2 years, renewable for a maximum of three years. Annual stipends for recent Ph.D. recipients for the 2002 program year range from $34,000 to $61,000, depending upon the sponsoring laboratory. Financial support is provided for allowable relocation expenses and for limited professional travel during the duration of the award. The host laboratory provides facilities, support services, necessary equipment, and travel necessary for the conduct of the approved research program.

Applications, submitted directly to the National Research Council, are accepted on a continuous basis throughout the year. Those postmarked by January 15 will be reviewed in February, by April 15 in June, and by August 15 in October.

Information on specific research opportunities and participating federal laboratories, as well as application materials, may be obtained from the web site at www.national-academies.org/rap
