Get acquainted with the Galveston-Houston area

The University of Texas Medical Branch is located on Galveston Island, about 50 miles south of Houston. The island has more than 30 miles of beaches, a variety of leisure activities, first-rate restaurants, and an assortment of educational opportunities. The city has a multi-faceted economic base that includes tourism, and maritime, banking and insurance industries.

Galveston County north of the island features a variety of economic opportunities, as well. Aerospace, energy, manufacturing, health care and education are among the key economic drivers in the area. Surrounding Galveston Bay, the communities in this region also feature shipping and sailing. In addition to the health science institutions in Houston’s Texas Medical Center, a number of prominent universities are based in the area: Rice University, University of Houston, and Houston Baptist University, to name but a few.
